According to a new study, half the low-income people who have become unemployed, are without medical insurance. Last December there were about 5.8 million jobless in the U.S. with incomes about $44,100 for a family of four. About 3.1 million did not have health insurance. COBRA medical insurance is too expensive for most people to continue to buy after the private insurance stops. Cobra medical insurance can consume up to 84 percent of a families unemployment benefits. A report from the Commonwealth Fund stated that one in ten take advantage of COBRA medical insurance.
