California is cracking down on fraudulent discount health care companies that give us all a bad name. Maybe it’s the economy and the fact that California is deeply rooted in debt, but they have taken a strong stance and sent out a message to discount health care companies. The message; register, follow the steps, and don’t cheat your customers. It’s about time
Health care programs that are around simply to serve the patient take a hard hit when the fraudulent ones get all the press. International Association of Benefits (IAB) was operating under the precedent that with their discount card patients would receive the best coverage for the best price. It sounded like a great deal to many people, especially during these difficult times.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, IAB wasn’t all it pronounced it was. The monthly dues of around $250 were supposed to cover nearly everything. Regular doctor visits would cost $75 per visit, but hospital and emergency situations would be completely covered.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, many patients are in debt thousands of dollars due to IAB’s scam. Hospital and emergency situations were not covered by the health care company, and many Californian’s who were struggling financially have more to worry about.
Currently, while health care reform and politics is all over the news, fraudulent companies are doing whatever they can to reap the benefits of other people’s misfortunes. It’s despicable that while our neighbors are struggling and simply looking for a more affordable way to get through the day-to-day, others are literally kicking them when they’re down.
PrudentChoice is another health care company that has been ordered a cease-and-assist by California for fraudulent practices. After many consumer complaints, red flags went up. California found that neither IAB nor PrudentChoice had completed their state licensing paperwork.
Here’s the deal. There are fraudulent companies in every industry, including health care, and especially at this time. When you hold your money the closest is when you should do you diligent homework. If you’re thinking about dropping your current insurance for something that sounds better, take your time and investigate the company. Look into its background, founder and history. Is it ranked by the Better Business Bureau?
