Let’s talk executive physicals and why some people love to give them a bad rap. If you watch The Biggest Loser, you know exactly what an executive physical is, because I imagine is pretty much the same thing. When the contestants get their first real exam, they are put through a variety of tests, machines, scans, and procedures to evaluate every single cell in their bodies. The test can tell how old their body truly is beneath all the layers, how strong their heart is, what illnesses they have that they didn’t even know about, and much, much more.
The executive physical is indeed a life-saver, as many on the show would probably tell you. With its full body CAT scans and PET scans, an executive physical could detect a tumor that has not even fully formed, a tiny spot on your lungs, or an illness that no one would have caught otherwise. Many executive physicals have helped to diagnose cancerous tissue far before it became dangerous.
There’s been a lot of speculation about the executive physicals, their results and their costs. But, there is no doubt that it does diagnose problems that nothing else would have caught, and an executive physical quite possible could save your life. With the stress the comes along with being an exec, fighting for that big corner office while still keeping your people in line and the big man happy, it’s no wonder that many top execs suffer heart failure.
I read a blog recently that seemed to take pleasure in disgracing the executive physical, claiming there is no proof that it works. The blogger contacted the Mayo Clinic to ask about their procedure, and the director of the Executive Health Program of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn responded:
Executive health programs provide high-quality, comprehensive health care and offer a periodic health evaluation, which has been demonstrated to improve delivery of preventive services. Most importantly, if a medical condition is discovered through early detection, appropriate treatment can be delivered at an early stage. There are many different models of executive health. The model we have pioneered is based not on pampering and indiscriminate testing, but on an individualized evidence-based assessment and treatment guided by each patient’s unique risk factors, health history, symptoms, and examination. Separate from the obviously important health issues, sending an executive to one of these programs makes good business sense as an investment in a valuable resource, while saving time and money.
The director has some very valid points, and if you are investing in big business, and have the right man (or woman) behind the wheel, and you want to keep them around for quite some time, it might be in your best interest to have them get an executive physical.
If you ever have the time, jump over to the Mayo site where they have true testimonials from executive physical patients. The stories there will amaze you, like Bob whose life was saved after a heart problem was found that led to triple bypass surgery, or lawyer Steve who ended up with a pacemaker that ultimately saved his life.
Executive physicals do work, and are crucial for those who lead the insanely stressful lives of execs. So, now comes the time when you think about who’s going to pay for the outrageous costs and who to afford it. And that’s where Signature MD comes into the picture, or partner’s in crime (so to speak).
