On January 20th, Democrats will control Washington D.C. which will likely lead towards medical insurance for all U.S. citizens. The bad news is the cost to give the 45 million uninsured Americans health insurance will cost around $150 billion. And with a Medicare-like option for all it’s likely that it will lead to a Canadian style single payer health system because the government medical insurance policy will drive up cost of private insurance. Supports of Medicare say it is more efficient than private insurance, but the Medicare system is scheduled to go broke by 2018, and seniors express high satisfaction in only one part of Medicare that is private, Part D, prescription drug benefits.
Obama has said he wants energy and environmental laws to be his and second order of business behind economic recovery. But Ted Kennedy and Tom Daschle and pushing for health reform to take priority. Universal medical insurance is going to cost American’s a lot of money. Besides paying for people’s medical insurance, they also need to find more primary care doctors and nurses.
