There are literally hundreds of great resources out there to help patients find reliable doctors, medical advice, nutritional information to stay healthy, ways to keep medical records conveniently on hand, and even expert resources for the medical professionals. Women need more health care than men because of the combined demands of pregnancy and family planning. The typical American woman who wants to have two children will spend about five years being pregnant, recovering from pregnancy or trying to get pregnant, and about 30 years trying to avoid unintended pregnancies. – New York Times

Think about that for a second. Now, first of all I have no idea where the NYTimes got their pregnancy statistics from but that one paragraph is pretty amazing if it’s indeed true. Second of all, because of the above statements health insurance is “typically” more expensive for young women than men. Apparently this trend evens out near the ages of 40 and 50, according to AISHealth.com.

Emergency room visits in Massachusetts have remained at high levels, even after Mass switched to a universal-type health care plan for every resident. Yesterday we spent some time talking about how Twitter is teaching us about doctor wait times and patient annoyances. If you’ll remember, the post went on to talk about Massachusetts’ universal plan and how it has affected doctor wait times for patients in that state.

It seems that a new study released by the non-profit Urban Institute in Washington, D.C. has found that not only doctor wait times have gone up, but emergency room visits have gone up as well. Massachusetts’ emergency room visits were expected to drop dramatically after the universal state plan took effect, but that hasn’t been the case. According to the study, numbers have either risen or remained exactly the same for emergency room visits.

Have you had your flu vaccine yet? If not, it’s ok. It’s not quite that time yet, but it’s quickly approaching. Let’s talk about a scenario. Let’s say you walk into your doctor’s office for the flu vaccine, and you’re sitting in the waiting room with a bunch of sneezing, sniffling patients. You’re nervous about catching something before you get into see the doc and get your flu vaccine.

Then the nurse walks out and starts chatting with one of the sniffling patients. You see him sneeze into his hand, and then a moment later he pats the nurse on the shoulder as he walks out the door. Wondering if that nurse had her flu shot before she administers yours? Well, you’re not alone. Millions of patients are beginning to wonder the same question as they head out to get their flu vaccine. The fact of the matter is that not many nurses are following suit.

Are rising claims to blame for your rising health care costs? My wife informed me yesterday that her monthly insurance fees are going to go up in the next few weeks. Why? Well, in a mandatory employee meeting her superiors told her that it was because there were just too many claims over the past year, and the company could no longer help to cover quite as much as they used to.

Too many claims!? So, basically what they told her and her co-workers is that because too many people go sick, too many people actually used their health insurance, the rates were going up. Does that sound like a reasonable thing to you? I didn’t think so.

Here at the No Insurance Club, we love to point out the amazing talent that our favorite radio and tv talk show hosts have. No one takes the cake, grabs the noose (so to speak) like Rush Limbaugh. If he isn’t in the spotlight for a few days, you can be assured that he will find his way back with flare. Sometimes I wonder if his publicists and agents leak information to the media to make sure Limbaugh’s outbursts are criticized.
