Sure, it might be not be a scientific fact, but how can it not be? They should start doing research on the health factors of those who have concierge medicine as compared to those who still run with the old model of medicine. You know, the one that involves waiting a month or two before you get to see your family physician, then spending less than five minutes with him before he runs to his next appointment.
Last night, I was having a conversation with my grandmother about doctors in her time. She broke into this story about when my mother was younger and sick. Grandma called the doctor in the evening (back then it wasn’t called concierge medicine, it was just your family doctor) to get some advice.
“Make her a hot-tottie,” the doctor said.
I laughed out loud, because if a doctor were to recommend giving a three-year-old some whiskey today, he’d definitely be thrown out of the industry. But, that was the way things were back then, and, minus the whiskey prescription, that’s the way it can be today if you have concierge medicine.
According to Arney Benson, a good friend of the No Insurance Club, concierge medicine is better for everyone.
“The overall healthcare outcome would be better healthcare for the patients, less ER visits, less hospitalizations and a more compliant patient. The financial model also works by having less premiums and an astronomical savings to the overall healthcare delivery system as a whole.”
If you stop and really think about it, it’s truly not more expensive than most would think. When you take into account the amount of money you are saving on prescriptions, check-ups, and just staying healthy, concierge medicine is the best preventative medicine for the price.
Primary care physicians who can do it all are a dying breed. Back in the day, they could do it all. They studied and continued to learn medicine throughout their careers, constantly updating their knowledge to keep their patients healthy. They’d spend time with their patients to truly understand the problem, and to find a solution.
You’re lucky if you get more than five minutes with your primary care physician these days. Financially, it’s just possible for them to spend too much time with each patient, because there just isn’t enough time in a day to see enough patients to pay the mortgage, let alone have time to keep up on new medicine and new preventative techniques. The old model is more expensive for everyone, including the doctors who are lucky to see reimbursement.
We’re all looking for a new health care system, and change from the old model to an all-inclusive-fix-everything-solution. Perhaps, in the meantime because this debate might run on for quite some time, we should be looking at concierge medicine as an answer..
