Have you been affected by the devastating disease of Alzheimer’s personally? While the focus on medical care is prominent and should be, much more should be done to help the families to adjust and cope to the ever increasing problems and affects it has on the families as a whole. My mom has had the disease for years now and it not only affects the person with the disease but more than likely affects the family even more.
My mom and dad have been married for 67 years and now they are separated because of the devastating effects Alzhermer’s has inflicted on my mom. Mother now is confined to a home with 24 hour care.
Because of the progression of Alzheimer’s over the past few years Mother now has no idea who anyone is. She cannot talk at least to know or understand what she is saying. She cannot feed herself, dress herself or any of the normal everyday things one does to care for themselves. She is now at best an infant but in an adult’s body.
Daddy goes to see Mother nearly every day but goes home depressed because of it. I pray Mother will just pass because of the hurt daddy experiences every time he sees her with the effects of the effects of the dreaded Alzheimer’s disease. Mother and Daddy are a true example of the movie “The Note Book” of everlasting love.
It is extremely hard for me to go and see mother because to me, she is just existing. She is not really alive and living. She was once such a vibrant and even at times a bit ornery but now is only a shell. This shell caused by Alzheimer’s is not my mother.
Too all of you that have or are experiencing the devastation of Alzheimer’s in one of your loved ones whether it be a family or friend my prayers are with you.
